Replacing the Tablet-Style Radio in Newer Subaru Vehicles - What Are My Options?

Newer Subaru models use a large tablet-style infotainment unit that is integrated with the climate controls and vehicle settings:

-2020+ Outback and Legacy
-2022+ WRX
-2023+ Ascent
-2024+ Crosstrek and Impreza
-2025+ Forester

Exception: The 2025 Forester Wilderness kept the previous-generation electronics - if that is your vehicle, select "Forester Wilderness" in the dropdown above or use the 2016-2022 page HERE. (The 2026 Wilderness moved to the new architecture.)

Wondering about Apple CarPlay? The factory tablet units already include CarPlay and Android Auto - if yours is glitchy, a Subaru software update at the dealer usually fixes it. Want better sound instead? See step 3 below.

Can the factory unit be replaced? The wiring is not the problem - our Pioneer and Sony direct wire adapters will physically connect an aftermarket headunit in these vehicles. The problem is that the climate (HVAC) controls are built into the factory screen, and there is currently no way to retain them with an aftermarket unit. For that reason, most owners keep the factory unit and upgrade around it.

1Stop the Starlink tracking (and fix the front speaker)

Like the factory telematics in Toyota vehicles, Subaru's Starlink DCM transmits vehicle data over a built-in cellular connection. Our bypass plug lets you unplug the module without losing the front speaker - choose Option 2 for these newer models:

2Wiring for add-ons - the 38-pin jumper

The jumper connects between the factory harness and the unit on the 38-pin platform - the building block for add-on wiring and custom adapters:

3Upgrade the sound - keep the factory screen

Amplifier or subwoofer: See our subwoofer/amplifier install adapters HERE.

AM/FM antenna: These 38-pin models need a modified version of our Subaru antenna adapter - email us and we will build one for your vehicle.

Custom solutions: We build custom adapters for these vehicles regularly. Email us with your model, year, and what you are trying to accomplish. You can also check our Vehicle Wiring & Compatibility Database for model-specific details.
