This page provides information on the circuit board modifications and wiring adapters necessary to display a front camera to display on the multi-function display of a Subaru (usually a 2019-2024 Subaru Forester with the "upgraded" multi-function display).

Description:

In most cars, this modification requires modification to the circuit board inside the multifunction display. On the US Subaru Forester (other models TBD since we did our proof of concept on the Forester), Subaru did not populate the electronic components on the board to display a front camera. Even if you connect the camera to the board, you will not be able to wire in an OEM view switch to show the camera without adding these components. The components that are missing are 2 capacitors and a Schottky diode. Here is a diagram showing where the diode must be installed:

As a note: We usually do not surface mount the 2 capacitors to the board. These 100 pF capacitors are mounted in series on the board. When capacitors are in series, their values are divided (similar to resistors in parallel). These capacitors run between ground and the connection of the "View" switch, so they are essentially in parallel with the "View" switch. This leaves only the diode that must be surface mounted.

What functionality is available?

The Subaru MFD has 2 camera inputs. One is for the front camera (demonstrated here) and the other is for the side camera. We can add the side camera display function in a similar manner as discussed here but the location of the diode will be different on the circuit board.

Can AutoHarnessHouse mount the surface-mount diode for me?

Since installation of surface-mount components requires special skills and tools, we can perform the modification for you. What you will need to do is remove the MFD from your vehicle and ship it to us. You may remove the outer frame of the MFD but we recommend that you ship the display with the inner case/frame because that will keep the circuit board protected during shipment. If it turns out that you've already got the components that you need on your circuit board, that's excellent and we will refund the cost of the diode installation. In addition, if we can't get the front camera working for some reason, we will contact you to discuss the issue. Since wiring information is not available for the internal components of the MFD, we have no way of knowing which vehicles are compatible without bench-testing them. We will provide a shipping address in the US for the MFD unit once you make payment below!
