Frequently Asked Questions - Jeep Radio Installation
What wiring harness do I need for my Jeep Wrangler aftermarket radio? For 2002-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ models, our AHH-70-6502 series (replaces the Metra 70-6502) provides a plug and play connection for Pioneer, Sony, or ATOTO head units. For 2007-2018 Wrangler JK models, you will need a Metra 70-6522 harness. For 2018+ Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT models, the radio connector has changed again - contact us and we can recommend the right solution. |
Can I install an aftermarket radio in my Jeep without cutting wires? Yes! Our Jeep wiring harnesses are 100% plug and play. They connect directly between your Jeep factory wiring and your aftermarket head unit - no cutting, splicing, or soldering required. This preserves your factory wiring so you can always revert to the stock radio. |
What is the difference between the Metra 70-6502 and 70-6522? The Metra 70-6502 fits 2002-2008 Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles including the Wrangler TJ, Grand Cherokee WJ, and Liberty. The Metra 70-6522 fits 2007-2018 vehicles including the Wrangler JK, Grand Cherokee WK2, Charger, Challenger, and Ram trucks. Our pre-wired AHH-70-6502 versions add a direct plug connector for Pioneer, Sony, or ATOTO head units, eliminating soldering. |
Do I need a dash kit to install an aftermarket radio in my Jeep? Yes, most Jeep radio installations require a dash kit (mounting bracket) to secure the new radio in the dash opening. The dash kit is separate from the wiring harness. Use our Dash Kit Finder to look up the correct kit for your Jeep model and year. |
Can I add Apple CarPlay to my Jeep Wrangler? Yes! The easiest way is to install an aftermarket head unit that supports CarPlay (like the ATOTO S8 Pro or A6PF) along with a plug and play wiring harness. This gives you wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, GPS navigation, and a full touchscreen display. |
Will my Jeep steering wheel controls work with an aftermarket radio? Yes! You will need a steering wheel control (SWC) interface module like the ASWC-1 that translates the factory steering wheel button signals into commands your new head unit understands. Sony and many Android head units (like ATOTO) can often read the resistive SWC signal directly through a dedicated input wire, so you may not need a separate module with those brands. Contact us if you're not sure which setup you need. |
What steering wheel control adapter do I need for my Jeep? For most Jeep models, the ASWC-1 (Axxess Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface) is the most popular and widely compatible option. It auto-detects your vehicle and head unit brand during a simple programming sequence. For 2007+ Wrangler JK/JL and Grand Cherokee WK2 with CAN-Bus steering wheel controls, you may also consider the iDatalink Maestro or PAC RP4-CH11, which can retain additional factory features beyond just steering wheel buttons. |
Which Jeep steering wheel buttons will work with an aftermarket radio? With a properly installed SWC interface, you can typically retain volume up/down, track skip forward/back, source/mode, and mute buttons. Phone answer/end buttons may also work depending on the interface module and head unit combination. The ASWC-1 supports programmable button mapping so you can assign functions to match your new head unit. |
Does the Jeep Gladiator use the same radio harness as the Wrangler JL? Yes, the Jeep Gladiator JT shares the same platform as the Wrangler JL, and they use the same radio wiring connector. A harness that fits a 2018+ Wrangler JL will also fit a Gladiator JT. Contact us if you need help finding the right adapter for your Gladiator. |
