Bypassing the Starlink DCM when you replace a Subaru radio

What the DCM is, and why it gets in the way

The DCM — Data Communication Module — is the box that talks to Subaru for the SOS and Starlink services. In most cars it sits directly below the factory radio, in the space your new head unit wants to occupy. That is the whole problem: it is not electrically in your way so much as physically in your way.

You have two choices, and they are a genuine trade-off.

Option A — remove the DCM

Simplest physically. You lose some Starlink functionality. Worth knowing going in that this is not a five-minute decision to reverse if you later want the services back.

Option B — retain the DCM

Keeps the Starlink system working, but the module has to go somewhere, and getting it to sit alongside an aftermarket head unit takes some work. This is the route to take if the SOS system matters to you.

Keeping Starlink working — the part most people miss

If you want to retain Starlink and run an aftermarket head unit, the front speakers have to keep passing through the Starlink box, because that is how the system stays in the audio path. We use a 16-pin Starlink wiring adapter for the front speaker connections. The signal path looks like this:

Rear speakers do not need to go through it — connect those directly with RCA cables if you are running a processor.

Using speaker-level signals for the front channels is not a compromise we make for convenience. It is the only way to keep the Starlink system in the loop.

The bypass connector

Where the module is removed or relocated, we supply a bypass connector so the car stops looking for it. Which version you need depends on the model year — the newer platform uses a different one — so tell us the year and model and we will send the right part.
